The City of Zigil-Dûm Empty The City of Zigil-Dûm

Fri Jul 30, 2021 12:29 pm
Overview
The city of Zigil-Dûm, or Silver Halls, is the capital for dwarves. It is named as such due to the vast amounts of silver in the underlaying mines, which is used to decorate the upper levels of the city. The city itself is built into the mountains, into several levels. In the middle is the "main shaft", which allows travel between each level. It consists out of a series of stairs, elevators, and waterways which use positive displacement pumps to pull materials up from the lowest levels to the highest. The main shaft can be blocked off at any point, to deny access from or to any single part or level.

Near the grand gate also flow two rivers, down to and past nearby villages, down to the port city of Âhun Kibil, or Rivers of Silver. Humans call this city "Ironhaven" due to all the metal goods gathering there from Zigil-Dûm and getting distributed from there. The villages between Zigil-Dûm and Âhun Kibil provide food for the dwarves, while in return the dwarves provide them with tools and building materials.

Politics
At the head of this all, is king Oscar Brightshield. Underneath him are four noble families.

House Flashheart is in charge of trade. The merchant district and foreign trade are under the supervision of this house.
House Oakthorne runs the craftsmen district.
House Stonebeard looks after the miners.
House Blackhammer deals with all things military.

None of the noble families really have any quarrel with each other. Each house has at least one son helping out in another house. As such, there's no real interest in any backstabbing or political games.

Top level
The top level is right behind the grand gate. It consists of a square on which external merchants can put their stalls, and where purchased goods can be loaded up and transported out of the city. Flanking the square are various facilities for outside travelers and merchants, including inns and taverns, as well as guard houses to immediately deal with any thieves or potential rowdiness. Temples, libraries and universities can also be found here. At the far end is the throne hall, with the royal palace behind the throne hall. The entrance to the main shaft is behind the square as well.

Level -1
Below the first level lays the trade district. Various dwarves have their shops here, both for goods meant for internal market as well as goods meant for outside trade. The shops are at two sides of the main shaft. At a third side are the houses for the merchants. The fourth end are the grounds of House Flashheart.

Level -2
The level below is the military district. Baracks, training grounds, armory, military academy and war rooms can be found here. The estate of House Blackhammer is on this level.

Level -3
Below the military district are the craftsmen. Blacksmiths, alchemists, artificers, gunsmiths, goldsmiths, fletchers... All the workshops are located at this level, along with lodgings for the dwarves working there. House Oakthorne's grounds, as well as various trade schools, are here as well.

Level -4
The lowest level is that of the miners. This district has all the dwellings for the miners, and the estate of House Stonebeard. The entrance to the mines can also be found here.
